How to do a Sisterlocks™ : Flat Twist mohawk

Today we are taking it back to Sisterlocks™ and I will be explaining how you can achieve a quick , easy but fierce mohawk for any occasion . Sometimes as women we become super heroes and multitask all the drama that life throws at us so getting to a Stylist is just not an option . This quick style can be done by just about anybody ... I promise.

Step 1: Divide your hair into two sections , one at the top and another on the bottom . This distinction should have you seeing hair on the top and hair on the bottom. ( As you can see in the pic above)

Step 2: Begin to "part out sections" . With Sisterlocks™ , you hair has already been parted into small sections , so simply take small stands out to create a straight line .

Step 3: Take a good amount of hair , and begin to do flat twists . Flat twists are quite similar to corn rows , in that they both lay flat and closer to the scalp . The difference with flat twists is that , you need two strands instead of three.

Step 4: Take a black or clear rubber band to secure the hair . The rubber band should be placed at the middle of the twists and the ends should be left out. Do this for several other twists as big or small as you like

Step 5 : Add your favourite hair accessories and go !

This quick style is versatile and can be worn in so many different ways . You can do the front and leave the back out and curled or you can do it from the sides as shown in the picture . The choice is really yours based on how your interpret it.

Good Ole' Jamaican Cerasse Tea

Good Morning Beauties :-) It is a brand new week, forget about what happened last week because you get a chance to rectify everything that went wrong and set new goals . It's been a while since i spoke about Jamaican remedies/products and what better day than today.

Cerasse Tea  , also known as "bitter Melon", is a bitter high odor tea that is consumed at breakfast in most rural homes in Jamaica or in homes of people from rural backgrounds . I remember as a little girl my Grandmother would literally force me to drink this tea whenever i visited her and if i drank at least half a cup , my reward would be sugar :-)

Cerasse Tea has so many benefits that we may or may not even know about . See benefits below :

  • Blood Cleanser
  • Sugar control agent for Diabetes
  • Relieves Headaches and Migraine
  • Fights Flu
  • Prevents Cold
  • Good for joint aliments
  • Liver Complaints
  • Calms Nerves

Cerasse Tea can be sweetened with sugar , honey or even maple syrup and can be served hot or with ice. I literally can't image how it would taste cold but with all the people i consulted regarding this , they told me it's quite refreshing.

Back in the day , Cerasse was only found in the rural parts of the Island in fields where it had to be picked and was only accessible if you lived in those regions. As the years went by more people became aware of its many benefits and it became more "commercialised" and can now be found in Tea Bag form in almost all Supermarkets . Most of the older people believe that this waters down its full potential ... but some say it's a lot easier than going to a field , picking it , then brewing it for several minutes. As i always say , sometimes the best cures and remedies are right here in our backyards , we just have to really look , research and experiment.

Naturally Beautiful: How To Do a Twist Out

T.G.I.F Natural Beauties :-) We've made it through yet another work week . On Wednesday , the legendary Reggae Singer Bob Marley's birthday was celebrated in various forms , one of which was a Free Concert at Emancipation Park .. Did any of you attend?

Today, i will be explaining how you can achieve one of the easiest ,quickest  and "functional" at home styles. According to the Natural Hair Dictionary, A Twist Out is : " A hairdo where you two strand twist the hair, then allow it to dry by either air drying it or sitting under a dryer".  To achieve the perfect Twist out , follow the steps below.

Step 1: Dampen hair with water. Twist outs work better when the hair is wet or damp.

Step 2: Apply your favourite hair product that has a bit of a hold to it.  Massage all throughout the hair from roots to tips.Hair Gel can also be used in this case ( if you desire). Try to find alcohol free products that has a medium - firm hold.

Step 3: Begin to Twist the hair. This can be done by taking two strands of the hair and wrapping them across each other until what looks like a really loose braid begins to form. Do this until all your hair has been twisted.

Step 4 : Allow the hair to dry for several hours or for better results leave for overnight.

Step 5: Carefully undo all the twists then style and go. To finish off you can add a hair gloss /polisher and some hairspray.

Twist outs are a wonderful natural hairstyle. You get a lot of versatility , depending on the size of the twist you can let it last for as long as you want.

The Benefits Of A Professional Facial

It is the middle of the week and it's moving fast . It literally feels like last week was Christmas ..lol . We have been having some unpredictable weather here in Jamaica where one minute its hot then its cold ( at nights) and this can affect our skin significantly . Believe it or not , this is the perfect time to sort of "revive" your skin. What better way to do that than with a Professional Facial.

A Facial in Essence is a beauty treatment for the face. Getting a Professional Facial can rejuvenate your skin and gives your face that really nice natural glow in between your DIY regimen. The type of treatment you get will depend on your skin type . For example , if you have oily skin , you would get a different treatment from a person who has Combination Skin. If you are not sure what skin type you are that's not a problem ... it is highly recommended that you come in for a consultation before you get the actual facial . In this Consultation your Skin Care Specialist will do an analysis of your "Facial Skin" to determine your skin type. I am all for D-I-Y regimens and treatments but before you get into that , you want to make sure your skin is at its best and this is usually done by professionals. Below are 3 main benefits of getting a professional facial.

Professional Extraction: Acne and breakouts are known to cause scars from picking and squeezing and all the other terrifying things that we should not do to our skin. In a professional facial , the trained Skin Care Specialist will find a less "in-evasive " yet effective way to get rid of all that. The professional knows exactly how to do that extraction safely while yielding great results.

Professional Products: We are all familiar with those at home face masks and scrubs that are great , but the results only last for hours . When you get a Professional Facial , specially designed products are used to to improve your skin from the inside out for weeks . You will also be advised on the benefits of the products by your skin care specialist and how they will improve your skin in the long term.

Pampering by the Professional: Here at Adzua , we want your mind to be at ease when you come in for any of our services. There are special techniques used that can de-stress even the most tense person . Picture this : You've had the most stressful week/month and you come in to get a facial and your completely forget why you were so stressed because of the relaxing technique that was used.

If you want the best results for your skin for the long term , as well as pampering at the highest level . Come in to Adzua , and we will treat you like the royalty you are :-)

Naturally Beautiful: Finding The Right Products For Your Hair

T.G.I.F !!! Excitement :-) We have made it through another work week ladies .. if you had a bad week , relax , it's Friday and Adzua is here to make your day a lot better .

Today , I would like to share some products that helps with the maintenance of your natural hair . Some of these are treatments , shampoo conditioner and even tools . I have actually tried the products I've listed so I can attest to them all...YES..including the comb, my locks are small enough that I can comb through every now and again when I'm feeling a little idle :-)

A Wide Tooth Comb !

This is for firmly combing through those tights curls , kinks and knots especially after the hair has been cleaned. Find one that is not made of that breakable kind of plastic because trust me..my hair took out several of those before I started locking my hair.

Essential Oils

Olive Oil , Tea Tree Oil , Rose Hip Oil . All these can be found at your local Health Food Store or Baking Aisle in the Supermarket . These oils are beneficial in their "purest" forms . When you go on the hunt for these look for words like "pure , raw , virgin , unprocessed" before the oil .They are extremely light weight , great for moisturising and has nutrients your hair needs .

Shampoos and  Conditioners for Natural Hair

There are sooooo many different Shampoos and Conditioners on the Market for hair these days . If you are a naturalista , you want to stick to the ones that says all Natural Ingredients . Natural Hair in the Beauty world is hair that has not be altered in any way whether chemically or with heat. I like the Shea Moisture brand because they contain All Natural Ingredients which promote healthy hair growth.

A Spray Bottle

This might seem trivial but you need a simple spray bottle to store all your Essential Oils and Water in . When you use a spray bottle , the product is evenly distributed in your hair and is less messy than using your fingers to apply. These can be found in any Beauty Supply Store or simply recycle an old spray bottle you have.

These are my tips and the products I use to keep my clients hair in order . I hope you all have a safe and productive weekend .

The Amazing Soursop!

Soursop is a tropical fruit of the Annonaceae family , it is a native fruit of the Caribbean and Central America but grows more predominantly in the Caribbean because of the favorable weather conditions. It got its name because of the taste and prickly texture.

I actually came across some interesting facts as well as a very inspiring Cancer related story while doing my regular readings.

Soursop is good for : Arthritis , High Blood Pressure, Diabetes, High Cholesterol , Bad Breath , Bladder Infections, Colds , Coughs , Weight Loss , Skin Infections , Fatigue , Boost your Immune System to avoid deadly infections. It also helps with the Treatment and Prevention of Cancer than Chemotherapy , Attacks Cancer safely and effectively with an all natural therapy that does not cause extreme nausea, weight loss and hair loss .

Raymond and Yvonne Kirlew with Dr. Dennis Grant (Middle)

These amazing "healing" powers of Soursop was discovered here in Jamaica by a St. Ann couple. Yvonne Kirlew was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer in 2010 and was undergoing Chemotherapy that was slowly killing her in the process . After many medical treatments the Cancer would leave then come back and it was a constant struggle . Her husband Raymond was determined that he was not ready for his wife to leave him and now turned to Nature. Raymond acted upon information he received about the uses of the leaves and bark of the Soursop and began feeding his wife the juice he extracted from the leaves daily. From then, his wife has been living Cancer Free since 2010 . This amazing story is documented in The Gleaner , and you can access the full story by clicking the link
below :

Nature always provides the best remedies and i am a firm believer that there is a cure for everything , if only we allow ourselves to discover them . I also advise you to do extensive research as it relates to severe health conditions as Cancer .

Naturally Beautiful : Co-Washing

Good Morning Naturalistas! It is my favorite day of the week ... It's Friday :-) I have been waiting for this day all week :-)  I have decided to make Friday "Natural Hair" Day , meaning hair in its natural form that has not been altered in any way. Today , I would like to introduce you to what is known as "Co-Washing".

Gone are the days when the fuss is all about buying the most expensive Shampoo to wash your hair , it is all about the Conditioner! Consider your Shampoo de-throned. Now , Co-washing is simply using your conditioner as both Shampoo and Conditioner . If this seems strange , it will all be clear at the end of this post.

This gentle way of cleansing your hair minimises damage because Conditioners unlike Shampoos do not contain harsh sulfates that strips the hair of its natural nutrients.

How do I Co-Wash My Hair?

That's really simple. Let your hair down , then part your hair into large sections and massage into hair ( from root to tip). Repeat this process twice or maybe 3 times depending on the texture of your hair . If you have thicker hair , you would therefore need to do this more than once or twice so that the conditioner penetrates deep into your scalp. Natural Hair should be co-washed at least twice per week using your favourite Conditioner. Please note , the conditioner does not have to be expensive to be effective. ( You can find this Co-wash product in the picture above in local pharmacies. It is the Blue Magic brand and it is less that $500 jmd )

Co-washing adds the right amount of hydration to your hair and the best part is that it cuts down on frizz which is a big problem for natural hair. It makes your hair super soft and maintains your hair's natural "wave pattern". Visit Adzua Natural Hair Spa for all your hair needs.
